can do to minimize that risk. Hi, I’m Heather Brummett. I’m a physical therapist
and owner of Balanced Physical Therapy, Pilates, and Wellness Center in Glendale,
Arizona. I grew up dancing competitively in both
grade school in high school and then I moved to Los Angeles to pursue dance
dreams of becoming a professional dancer. I trained and studied on scholarship at
Joe Tremaine’s Dance Center and had wonderful mentors and instructors. But it
was during that time that I suffered a significant ankle injury after a long
day of classes and I just really wish I knew then what I know now. I have a huge
passion for dance and for working with dancers and an even greater passion for
sharing the knowledge that I’ve learned. As a physical therapist with the dance
community I’ve developed dance medicine programs that are comprehensive for both
instructors as well as dancers of all ages and levels. These programs are
specifically designed for each group to increase awareness of the demands made
on the body by dance and how to best meet those demands; and then also how to
minimize the risk of injury and dance. My overall goal is for every dancer to have
this knowledge so they have a long and prosperous dance career but more
importantly for every dancer to be functioning later in life without any
joint issues pain or any limitations. Dancers, gymnasts, and ice skaters tend to
have a high risk for injury due to the various postures and pressure on the
body that is required during rehearsal and performance. Ccommon injuries are due
to overuse, muscle imbalances, lack of appropriate flexibility and strength
and/or join instabilities. In my dance medicine evaluations, we test
muscle strength and flexibility, evaluate joint and body alignment, and overall
assess dance technique and range of motion for the dancers specific
requirements. Each dancer is educated on how to better position their body to aid
in prevention and management of injuries. It is important to know how the joint
functions and what you can expect out of your joints regarding flexibility. Each
person has a certain range of motion in their joints and not all joints are
created equal. To keep your joints safe and healthy you
want to know how far you can push your flexibility and how to train your
strength to keep that flexibility. I’ve developed my dance medicine programs for
the unique needs of the dancer and their teachers. The training sessions educate
the dancer in ways to help them appreciate their bodies more. They are
taught simple techniques to help the dancer keep his or her body strong and
ready for the demands of the long studio times and increasingly more advanced
movements. Dancers are educated on the dancers anatomy, injury prevention, and
enhanced technique and skill. They have some aha moments when they understand
how to reduce or eliminate pain or difficulty with movements especially
when due to a recurrent injury or dysfunction. My dance medicine programs
consist of five specific sessions. Anatomy of the dancer – in this session
you will learn specific anatomy of the spine hip the neck shoulder foot and
ankle discover what the clicks, pops, cracks, clunks, and pain are all about and how to
keep the joint integrity to eliminate these annoying noises and pain.
Your core your Center, what exactly is it – here you will learn the muscles of the
core and how to train them. Learn specific ways to connect to your core in
order to fine-tune those muscles. This will maximize your results and improve
your performance. Intelligent Movement Training –
Put the dancer Anatomy in motion. learn more specific exercises and stretches to
help you improve your technique with intelligent movement training. We use
dance warm-ups and cross-training workouts to integrate knowledge with
movement. A dancer can often be identified in public because of his or
her posture. Learn not only how to have better posture, but how to have a posture
that works for you as a dancer. Train Like Professional Dancers – Pilates is
used by both ballet and modern dancers worldwide. You can learn these same
exercises in order to give you the upper edge as a dancer. Remember, the goal is to
be the best dancer that you can be and to get there without injuring yourself.
