Gavin Williams: Making Medicines from Microbes

How can we build medicines from microbes
I’m Gavin Williams. I’m an associate professor of chemistry in the College of
Sciences at NC State. When I was quite young I really used to enjoy building
things out of Lego bricks. I love the idea of starting off with a
big pile of unconnected bricks and then figuring out how to assemble them in different
ways to to make something that didn’t exist before. And we essentially take a
very similar approach to engineering biology to make new molecules. The ultimate goal of my research here at NC State is to understand how complex molecules are constructed in
nature so that we can make new ones to treat diseases in the future. So we’re
always trying to find ways of accessing new versions of existing drugs so that we can
find new, more potent, more stable antibiotics. I design and build new ways to treat diseases. That’s how I think and do at NC State.
