Progesterone Home Hormone Test | Dr Fertility

The progesterone home test is a simple
to use, finger-prick blood test that checks your progesterone levels to see
if you’ve ovulated in your current cycle. Progesterone is a fertility hormone that rises after ovulation and prepares the lining of the womb for
implantation and the fertilised embryo. My patients often ask
me when’s the best time to take the progesterone test. Getting the timing
right your test is important, but it can be tricky. You should take the test seven
days before you expect to start your period. So if you have a 28-day cycle you
should take this test on day 21 to confirm that ovulations happened. This
is because your progesterone levels rise after ovulation. If you have an irregular
cycle or unsure when to take the test, please contact us at Dr Fertility. You should take the blood sample in the morning before 9:00 a.m. and before you eat
anything. A progesterone result above 30pmol/L suggests that you’ve ovulated in that cycle. If your result is low it’s
important to check your test has been taken at the right time, and it might be
necessary to repeat the test. In terms of drawbacks as well as making
sure you take the test at the right time it is important you’re not using any
hormonal contraception when you take the test because this can affect your
results. After stopping hormonal contraception, it’s best to wait until
after three full menstrual cycles before you do this test. When trying to conceive it
is also important to consider yours and your partner’s lifestyle and make some
healthy choices to support your fertility.
