Santa Cruz police chief reveals new plan for cutting down on needle litter

PROBLEM.. AND IT WAS A
HUGE PROBLEM AT THIS
HOMELESS CAMP.. THE POLICE CHIEF
NOW AIRING HIS
CONCERNS.. AND ONE
SUGGESTION FOR
CUTTING DOWN ON THE
LITTER? A NEEDLE BUY BACK PROGRAM.. cleanup at this santa
cruz homeless camp.. un-earthing hundreds if
not thousands of use
syringes
the cleanup also
revealing what some
might see are flaws in the free needle
program.. the needle distribution is
handled by a gro
called “harm reduction
roadshow”.. Which has
applied to the state for
permission to expand the program to other parts of
santa cruz county.. but
opponents pointing t
the ross camp have gone
to social media asking
people to write state leaders urging them to
oppose any expansion of
the needle program santa cruz police chief
andrew mills says any
proposal to distribute
additional needles must
include a method to
reduce needle litter.. One strategy.. Make it
unlawful to possess or
use a syringe in a park,
on the beach or near a
school
Another option.. A needle buy back
program.. The chief
suggests 5 cents a
needle this camp cleanup
revealing the ugly side of
drug addiction .. But
serving as a reminder
why the free needle
program exists in the first place. NOW THERE WAS
RED BOX AT THIS CAMP.. FOR DRUG USERS TO
DISPOSE OF THEIR
NEEDLES BUT OBVIOUSLY
NOT EVERYONE WAS
USING IT.. CREWS MAKING A LOT
PROGRESS TODAY IN
CLEANING UP THIS CAMP
.. MUCH OF THAT
CLEANUP COULD BE
COMPLETED BY THE END OF THIS WEEK.. ERIN.. WITH REGARDS TO
EXPANDING THE NEEDLE
PROGRAM.. THE PUBLIC COMMENT
PERIOD FOR THAT
APPLICATION IS OPEN
UNTIL MAY 24th.###

  • Mills must be on crack if he thinks we can afford a buy back program with all the civil rights lawsuits that are being filed against the city. Put down the pipe Mills. Keep the Harm Reduction Coalition moving forward.
